FIFTY YEARS AGO
July 12, 1962

Pat Benz of Springville qualified in the New York State Women’s Amateur Golf Tournament at Cooperstown early this week. She won her first match on Tuesday.

More than 4,000 attended the art show last week at the high school.

Silver drinking cups, donated by the Bertrand Chaffee Hospital to the first girl and boy born in the hospital during the Concord Sesquicentennial week, were presented to Pamela Alice Spencer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Spencer of Collins Center and Frederick John Hauri, son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Hauri of West Valley.

On Thursday of last week, Don Belscher ran out of his barber shop and grabbed the bumper of a car to keep it from rolling into another car. He hung on until the owner set the emergency brake.

Governor Rockefeller announced that New York State Atomic Research and Development Authority has extended to Nuclear Fuel Service Inc., a subsidiary of W.R. Grace and Co., an option to lease for nuclear fuel reprocessing purposes the authority’s Western New York Nuclear Service Center in Cattaraugus County, south of Springville.

Van de Bogart – Smith – On July 6, at the Danby Federated Church, Danby, N.Y., Wanda Elaine Smith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Smith of Springville, became the bride of Gary Van de Bogart, son of Mr. and Mrs. Almus Van de Bogart of Ithaca.

Lerminiaux – Johnson – In Salem Lutheran Church, Springville, on June 23, Donna Johnson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wilhelm Johnson of Little Falls, was married to Daniel Lerminiaux, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Lerminiaux of Springville.

FORTY YEARS AGO
July 13, 1972

George Schuster passed away on July 4, 1972. He was the man who won national acclaim when he drove the car that won the famous Auto Race Around the World in 1908.

The East Concord Fire Department celebrated its 25th anniversary on July 1, with a banquet held at the Springville Moose Club.

M. Helen Ryan was presented a 24-year service award at the M&T Bank in Springville.

Kearney – Ballachino – On May 13, in Salem Lutheran Church, Springville, by the Rev. Daniel Knueppel, Diane Marie Ballachino, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Angelo Ballachino of East Concord, became the bride of Michael William Kearney, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Kearney of Springville.

Wozniak – Wisnewski – On June 24, at St. Joseph’s Church, Spring City, Pa., by the Rev. Robert Riedy, Joan Wisnewski, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Glen Wisnewski of Spring City married John Wozniak, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Wozniak of Springville.

July 8, 1982

Congressman Jack Kemp made his first official trip into Cattaraugus County, meeting with county officials and taking time to speak out on the issues.

The announcement has been made that McDonald’s will open a restaurant in Springville this fall.

Ida Richardson, a resident of the Jennie B. Richmond Nursing Home, celebrated her 100th birthday on July 3.

Pastor Gilbert Snyder of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church bid farewell to his congregation and West Valley, leaving for new pastoral duties in Buffalo.

TWENTY YEARS AGO
July 16, 1992

Springville and Eden-North Collins Rotary clubs hosted John Rydzik, district governor-elect of international Rotary District 7090. The recent meeting, which took place at the Leland House, was for installation of new officers in the two clubs.

West Valley’s Jason Czapla was selected and played in the Western New York High School Baseball All-Star Game at Canisius College Sunday. He was one of 44 players chosen and the only one from Cattaraugus County.

Colden native Dave Wohlhueter, director of sports information at Cornell University since 1977, has been named recipient of the College Sports Information Directors of America 1991 Arch Ward Award.

TEN YEARS AGO
July 11, 2002

Effective immediately, the consumption of alcohol in the Concord Community Park on North Buffalo Road will be restricted by an approval permit. The action comes as a result of property damage after alleged drinking in the park by a group of young adults on Sunday evening.

Bertrand Chaffee Hospital held an open house on July 17. The new emergency room department opened its doors to the public with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Cadet Bradley Frank, son of Dale and Amy Frank of West Valley, graduated from the U.S. Military Academy on June. He graduated from West Valley Central School in 1998.

Christopher and Janine Lemke of Springville, July 2, Keegan Alexander.

Girls were born to:
