FIFTY YEARS AGO
June 14, 1962

If you saw John Hunchar out this week peddling papers, it wasn’t because he longed for the good old days. One of his boys couldn’t make it at the last minute, so one of the routes received the personal service of the boss.

Janet R. Harrison was one of the graduates of the Eastman Dental Dispensary in Rochester.

Bruce Richardson, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Harry B. Richardson, was awarded a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the college of Arts and Science at Hobart College.

Jaycee officers installed on June 16 will be: President Raymond Fisher, First Vice President Richard Enser, Second Vice President Hugh Shoop, Secretary Charles Rogers, Secretary-Treasurer John Dygert, Treasurer Richard Benzing, State Director Richard Fancher, Directors George Welch, Richard Ganschow, Robert Kaufmann and Dr. William McMahon.

June 15, 1972

Charles Whitmer and Robert Schlageter, teachers at Griffith Institute, took first place in the Interstate Teachers Doubles Bowling Tournament, competing against 163 other teams.

The outstanding senior athletes of the year awards at Griffith Institute went to Holly Spittler and Rick Rudolph. The awards were presented at the annual spring athletic awards program.

Albert Coia Jr. has been selected for the annual trip to the National Boys Scout Camp at Philmont in Cimarron, N.M.

Wilkes – Molnar – On June 10, in St. James Roman Catholic Church, Jamestown, by the Rev. Father Telker, Linda Irene Molnar, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Molnar of Jamestown, married Roger Wilkes, son of Mrs. and the late Mr. Charles Taufer of Springville.

THIRTY YEARS AGO
June 17, 1982

On June 13, at the Springville Lions Regatta, Jimi Holmwood Kozma and his mother Melody were the first ones to take a ride in a helicopter. They flew over the Cattaraugus Creek and saw the boats in the race.

The Springville chapter of the American Field Service has received word that William Rindfuss, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Rindfuss of Springville, will spend the summer in Wasquehal, France.

After 38 years of driving school buses for Springville-Griffith Institute, Werner Blesy retired on June 9, his 65th birthday.

TWENTY YEARS AGO
June 18, 1992

The Dunkirk firm of Carol Case Siracuse, AIA has been retained to profile preliminary architectural ideas related to efforts to build a town of Concord library.

The Springville Journal has established an annual college scholarship program at Springville-Griffith Institute and West Valley Central schools. The Journal and its parent company, H&K Publications, have reached an agreement with administrators at the two schools to begin the program this year. A scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior at each school who plans to pursue higher education in a journalism-related field.

The Springville Village Board announced the appointment of town of Concord resident Karl Lux to the position of superintendent of the Department of Public Works. The position has been vacant since October.

Paying the town of Boston’s garbage bill has become a touchy issue during recent board meetings, resulting in Supervisor William Eagan’s calling Councilman Karl Simmeth’s concern over the matter a “political movement.”

Activity is picking up for the newly-formed Springville Youth Incorporated Boys & Girls Club of Springville. SYI B&G Club Board President Michael Sheridan told the SYI board that a cleanup project is being planned for the Maple Avenue property that is slated to become the club’s facility.

The Chaffee-Sardinia Fire Company dedicated a new fire truck as part of the town of Sardinia’s Annual Memorial Day Services held at the town park.
