Orchard Park Chorale to Perform Two Concerts:
Unique Partnership with Area Students is Featured
When the Orchard Park Chorale performs its Voices Across the Americas concerts on Saturday, May 18 and Sunday, May 19, the group will be joined by a combined Honors Choir formed with representatives from area high schools.
George Davis, a member of the Chorale and the choral director at the Buffalo Arts Academy suggested this, says Kathleen Keenan-Takagi, music director of the Orchard Park Chorale (OPC). Its a unique collaboration involving students from the Arts Academy, City Honors School and Williamsville East High School (under the direction of Maureen Reilly).
The program developed into Voices Across the Americas showcasing a variety of song styles reflecting North and South American culture and traditions. The centerpiece is Frostiana, a collection of Robert Frosts poems set to music by renowned choral composer Randall Thompson. Selections from Sondheim and Bernsteins West Side Story will include solos by OPC tenor Ben Streeter and soprano Jessica Wheaton. A French Canadian folksong Jentends le Mouin (I Hear the Mill) echoes the sound of a working millwheel with its staccato rhythm. Te Quiero (I Adore You) is a popular Argentinian love song with lyrics written by Uruguayan poet Mario Benedetti. Salmo 150 (Psalm 150) is a stylish, contemporary Brazilian song. A contemporary work by composer Peter Willsher, Everyone Suddenly Burst Out Singing, is based on Siegfried Sassoons poem Everyone Sang, written in 1918 to commemorate the end of World War I.
Karen E. Willliams, OPC assistant conductor is a featured vocal soloist in Robert Rays Gospel standard He Never Failed Me Yet and will accompany the chorale on piano in Oscar Petersons Hymn to Freedom.
The program concludes with three pure American treasures, Lift Every Voice, The Battle Hymn of the Republic and Let There Be Peace on Earth.
Keenan-Takagi says, Adding the student voices to these pieces brings a special energy to the selections. The student singers and the Chorale began rehearsals separately and came together in April. Its wonderful to see and hear how to groups work together to interpret this program.
Joanne Hollenbeck is the OPC accompanist.
Voices Across the Americas will be performed Saturday, May 18, 2pm at the Bethel AME Church, 1525 Michigan Ave., in Buffalo, and Sunday, May 19, 7pm at the Orchard Park Presbyterian Church, 4369 S. Buffalo St., Orchard Park. Ticket prices range from $5 to $25 and are available from OPC members or by visiting www.orchardparkchorale.org.
This concert is supported in part with cultural funding from the 2013 adopted Erie County Budget, Mark C. Poloncarz, County Executive, and the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature, administered by Arts Services Initiative of Western New York.
The Orchard Park Chorale was founded in 1975: its members come from 15 communities in Erie, Chautauqua and Allegany counties and include professional and amateur singers. The chorales mission is to provide excellent choral performance, contribute to the quality of life in Southtowns, and bridge the region through shared music making.

The May meeting of the Buffalo Civil War Roundtable will present distinguished Civil War author, Brian Bennett from Geneseo College, on Wednesday, May 22 at 6:00pm at the Buffalo History Museum. This is the second in our lecture series: Three Days at Gettysburg Day 2, focusing on the titanic battle for Little Round Top and the involvement of the 140th NY Volunteer Infantry.
Brian Bennett has been researching the 140th NY for over 25 years. The importance of the 140th at Gettysburg and the struggle for Little Round Top has been superbly detailed in his three books on the regiment: Sons of Old Monroe, The Beau Ideal of a Soldier and a Gentleman, and An Unvarnished Tale.
The 140th NYVI was organized in Aug/Sept 1862 with men from Rochester and the surrounding areas in Monroe County. It was not until July, 2 1863, the second day at Gettysburg, that the men saw severe punishment while successfully defending Little Round Top.
Come join us to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg. Free admission and free parking. The speaker will begin at 6:30pm.
